BCPC Quarterly Meeting

Thursday, November 15, 2018

Lunch will not be provided; Snacks will be available

Program: 1:30 - 4:30 pm

Topic 1

Conducting a DR Exercise

Melissa Rhodes, Customer Community Manager at Assurance Software Inc.

The presentation will begin with briefly describing the process of assessing a new application and how those application assessments help define the test’s objectives. We will discuss steps taken prior to the exercise in order to plan for technology and resources and what to expect during the exercise. We will also discuss lessons learned and how to appropriately report issues and recommendations to gain traction for your programs.

Topic 2

Mental Health Preparedness

Tashonda Haugabrook, Adjunct Professor in the Emergency & Disaster Management Program at Metropolitan College of New York, and a Consultant for KETCHConsulting.

Why mental health preparedness? Because employers need workers to be able to recognize when a colleague is in crisis. Even further, mental health and addiction issues are driving up healthcare costs and absenteeism. High stress positions and frontline workers are even more prone to severe mental illness, and are less likely to go to their employers for support. Employee assistance programs are currently the only viable solution being offered to workers and these programs are generally unpopular. A 2015 "Work & Well-Being Study," conducted by the American Psychological Association, found that only 45% of employees felt that their 'employer provided the resources necessary for employees to meet their mental health needs.' In that same survey, more than 25% of workers reported some depression or anxiety. So often, human resource staff can miss the signs of an individual crisis or potential workplace disturbance related to their employees, and the legal implications of this can be detrimental to an organization. This presentation aims to give continuity planners a few tools to help fill any gaps that may exist in their mental health preparedness efforts and their current employee assistance program.
